Niaa is the funding & impact platform for locally-led development. It puts budget and initiative in the hands of local changemakers - and turns transparency and impact into a by-product, not a burden.
The name
Niaa began as shorthand for “NGO in an app”.
Later we discovered nia - Swahili for purpose.
A fitting coincidence: purpose is exactly what we back.
Why Niaa
There are so many people with the ideas, the time, and the drive to make real change. But the system absorbs far too much of it - in applications, reports, and long chains of intermediaries. Decisions are made far from the people doing the work, and the energy that could create impact on the ground is held back.Most digital tools only make this worse: they rebuild the old process on a screen and cement the same bureaucracy - and the same distribution of power. Niaa starts from a blank page instead, designed for what today’s technology actually makes possible.

A simple field diary (photo + note) becomes reports and stories - AI-assisted, with a human in the loop.
Who's behind it
Dr. Ronald Steyer - over 15 years in international development finance, including as Director of the KfW office in Ethiopia and to the African Union, alongside roles in strategy, change management, and management consulting. Co-founder of Positiveblockchain.io.Two worlds - international cooperation and responsible digital technology - and Niaa brings them together. The conviction: take the people who get things done seriously as social entrepreneurs, and make funding simple, transparent, and effective. Niaa is in development - we’re looking for funders and organizations who want to back engaged people in new ways and co-design pilots with us.
